Background of the Study
Pragmatic efficiency in business communication is crucial for effective decision-making and operational success. In Nigerian corporate settings, meetings serve as key platforms for information exchange, strategic discussions, and conflict resolution. This study investigates the pragmatic strategies employed during corporate meetings to facilitate clear and efficient communication. Nigerian businesses, operating in a competitive and rapidly evolving environment, rely on pragmatic cues—such as tone modulation, contextual markers, and interactive turn-taking—to achieve communication efficiency (Adebayo, 2023). Meetings often blend formal language with informal interactions, necessitating the strategic adaptation of linguistic practices to suit diverse participants. Through analysis of meeting transcripts and audio recordings, this research will identify pragmatic markers that either enhance or impede message clarity. The study aims to reveal how these markers contribute to effective discourse management and decision-making, providing insights that can inform corporate training programs and communication policies. Findings from this study are expected to enhance organizational productivity and employee satisfaction by optimizing meeting communication strategies (Balogun, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its critical importance, pragmatic efficiency in Nigerian corporate meetings is not well understood. Current literature on business communication often overlooks the detailed pragmatic aspects that influence meeting outcomes, focusing instead on general rhetorical strategies. This oversight leads to potential miscommunications and delays in decision-making, undermining organizational effectiveness. Without a systematic evaluation of the pragmatic markers used in meetings, businesses may continue to experience inefficiencies that hamper productivity. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the specific pragmatic markers and interactional strategies within Nigerian corporate meetings, aiming to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing communication efficiency (Adebayo, 2023; Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify key pragmatic strategies used in Nigerian corporate meetings.

  2. To assess the impact of these strategies on communication efficiency.

  3. To recommend best practices for enhancing pragmatic efficiency in business settings.

Research Questions

  1. What pragmatic markers are commonly used in Nigerian corporate meetings?

  2. How do these markers affect the efficiency of communication?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve pragmatic efficiency in corporate interactions?

Significance of the Study
This study sheds light on the pragmatic dimensions of business communication in Nigeria, offering practical recommendations for improving corporate meeting effectiveness. The findings will benefit business leaders, communication trainers, and organizational development practitioners by emphasizing strategies that enhance clarity and operational efficiency. Improved pragmatic efficiency in meetings can drive better decision-making and overall organizational success (Adebayo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the analysis of pragmatic efficiency in Nigerian corporate meetings and does not extend to other forms of business communication.
